KCRW Tracklist System

Just completed the new KCRW tracklist system. Instead of the old (and outdated) table based static system, KCRW.com now has an auto-updating tracklist complete with AJAX effects, integrated ads, RSS feeds, etc…

NEW FEATURES
User Experience: A significantly improved user experience through better design and functionality.

Search: Unlike our previous playlists these pages are fully searchable with data going back to 2006. Want so search by artist, song, label, channel, host, date you can do it.

Sharing: Track lists for specific shows and custom searches can now be bookmarked on your browser or shared with friends on Facebook, MySpace, etc.

MP3 Ecom: Auto search Amazon and iTunes with “buy now” links

Also: DJ Comments, Band members (when there is a live performance), and advertisement support (two banner sizes that mirror the KCRW media player for consistency)

I created the design in-house and outsourced the html/css production. The application was programmed by two independent developers. Project managed in Basecamp.

Check it out at http://newmedia.kcrw.com/tracklists

UPDATE: It seems even with pinging Feedburner their RSS feed is still only updated at 30min intervals. Looking into a locally hosted/cached way of offering a feed. I’m also working on updating the usablility based on the feedback the KCRW interactive team has been getting.

LRC Live

This coming Sunday at 5PM I’ll be working with Interactive Producer Rob Lafond to do a live webcast of Left, Right, and Center Live at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica. We’ll be using Flash Media Live Encoder and Limelight Networks to stream live video via Flash Player. Check out KCRW.com Sunday to watch Arianna Huffington, Matt Miller, Robert Scheer and Tony Blankley discuss the current state of politics — the show will be simulcast over the web and on the air.

Obama in 2008!

Los Angeles Obama Party

Celebrating this historic election with 10,000 other Obama supporters at the Plaza Hotel in Century City. Eight years was long, but this probably wouldn’t have happened without it =)

Comments for To The Point and Which Way LA

Finally launched the IntenseDebate commenting system on KCRW.com for two programs: To The Point and Which Way LA. The system is integrated with Plone so new “blogs” can be added to the CMS with an ID. Multiple users can moderate the discussion. Their generic install was easy to get up and running — was a java script snippet so comments shouldn’t be indexed for kcrw.com, though comments in Wordpress MU will be mirrored into the Wordpress comment system.

Kyte.tv Mobile Content

A few months back I contacted Tesa from Kyte.com to find a way for volunteers during the KCRW pledge drive to interact with listeners. We setup a webcam streaming volunteer comments via branded Kyte player and received around 150,000 player hits in a week. Since then the station purchased Nokia N95 8gig phones to hand out to producers at various events. We can now produce quality mobile video content on the fly (even live streaming video if need be). So far we’ve gathered behind the scenes content from the Democratic National Convention, Republican National Convention, and now CMJ08 from New York.  There’s a Kyte application for Symbian phones as well as the iPhone. Also, a Facebook app for social networking sharing, chat and audio comments from within the player, and embed codes.

Guest DJ Art

The Guest DJ Art I designed was featured on NBC.com. Check out the audio sets at the KCRW guest DJ Page (including Conan O’Brien, John Favreau, Danny DeVito, etc) — The “mic” branding at top I designed early this year.

KCRW Media Player featured on Adobe

KCRW Media Player

KCRW Media Player

The Flash based media player we at KCRW and Digitaria worked so hard on was featured today in Adobe’s Customer Showcase as the “Site of the Day”

Previously mentioned in Wired and given a Webby honorable mention. The player serves up on-demand and live video through a CDN network. Ads and pre-rolls are served through Castfire.

E-Commerce Solutions

I’m sometimes asked by clients: whats the easiest most accessible ecommerce solution out there? The answer usually depends on budget, who they have to manage the online store (if anyone), and their product line.

For more customized self-hosted solutions I tend to go with Zen Cart. Its open source, there’s a ton of plugins, and an extensive developer network for support. Lately though, I’ve become more interested in Magento. While I’ve heard the server load can be intense, the theme system looks very intuitive, and minor details (like mobile commerce support) make their application very attractive.

For small scale boutique sites I’ve come across a few hosted shopping cart solutions: E-Junkie, Shopify, and Foxycart. E-Junkie looks great except they offer no support for UPS shipping (a requirement for a recent client) and Shopify is fairly expensive for what you get (and you’re locked into their CMS system — which works for some people, but not for a web designer). I recently launched a site using Foxycart — a hosted solution charging a flat per-month fee. So far its worked great. The cart is easily customizable, works flawlessly with an Authorize.net gateway (and they use their own SSL certificate). Most importantly for this particular client, Foxycart supports automatic UPS shipping calculation and discounts over a certain price in a specific product category.

Wordpress

While researching the migration of all the KCRW blogs from Vox to a local install of Wordpress, I figured it would be a great idea to create my own blog.  =)

Part of a larger SEO strategy for KCRW, I’m looking into moving our Vox hosted Left Right and Center, KCRW Music News, Good Food, etc. blogs onto a local install of Wordpress MU (the multi-user version wordpress.com uses) The options for extending Wordpress are amazing; from auto generated sitemaps, auto inserted Google Analytics code, caching, etc. to iPhone compatibility and Facebook connect support.

In addition to blogs, there exists a general need on KCRW.com for a user comment system. Two 3rd party applications might be easily integrated into the KCRW.com CMS in addition to the blogging system: Disqus and IntenseDebate (now owned by Automatic). From talking with the CEO of Disqus it seems they will eventually support Facebook Connect and OpenID (allowing people to comment on KCRW without registration if they have a Facebook or Yahoo account). Both options look promising as we move forward…
